Recently, I’ve begun keeping a list of trend predictions in my notes app. I created one for fall trends and since the autumn equinox has passed, it’s time to release the list. These trends are a mix of observations from media and my own “ins” of the season.
1. Skinny Jeans
I’m aware that to some this is not good news. That being said, I feel vindicated since Vogue.com posted an article about jeans becoming slimmer and slimmer as of late. The difference between the skinny jeans of now and those of the 2010s is the material and silhouettes. Jeggings are not coming back in style. Real, sturdy denim that accentuates the legs is in though.
Styling Tip(s): You can never go wrong with the tried and true skinny jean + boot combo. If you wan to ease back into the style, try having a bigger (not necessarily baggier) silhouette on top. A structured top would pair well with slimmer jeans. If that’s not your speed, a “go see” style uniform could work as well
2. Suede
Especially in bags, suede in various shades of brown is going to be big this fall. This trend can be seen in recent releases from Prada, Miu Miu, and Chloé.
Style Tip(s): Try some different color palettes. Try mixing a mocha brown bag to a sky blue sweater.
3. Cow Print
This trend is already doing numbers in stores and on social media. Cow Print outerwear and bags especially are in.
Style Tip(s): Don’t go for (screen) printed cow prints. Faux (or ethically sourced/second hand) real cow hair garments are the way to go. Screen printed or otherwise non-texture cow print can look cheap often times.
4. Boho Chic
The romantic silhouettes of the seventies paired with flowing fabrics is making a comeback. From Isabel Marant’s reemergence to Chloé, the boho chic trend is going to be fun for fall.
Style Tip(s): Pair feminine, flowing fabrics with more masculine or industrial aspects for juxtaposition. This includes outerwear, shoes, and jewelry. You can also go fill throttle frilly but make sure that your top and bottom aren’t both too loose.
5. Fur
Fur has been a divisive fashion staple for years. Discourse over ethics and sustainability made fur coats fade to the background for a while. There is a resurgence underway though for the outerwear. Gucci’s Milan fashion week show is a prime example.
Style Tip(s): Shopping secondhand or from ethical brands to find furs is the best option. Faux fur sounds great in theory but even if it’s better for animals, it’s worse for the environment unfortunately.
6. Bean motif jewelry
Not to sound like a stereotypical hipster but I’ve been wearing a bean necklace since the late 2010s. Back in high school my family took a trip to Tiffany and Co.’s Chicago store and there I received my most prized jewelry piece. That being my Elsa Peretti bean pendant necklace. I’ve worn it nearly everyday since. As of the past year or so, I’ve seen the humble bean get more hype. I even see bean necklaces in Marshall’s now. It might seem a bit niche right now, but trust me.
This fall try any or all of these trends, maybe all of them at once. Each trend is enough to stand on its own but they could also work extremely well together.
